The Detroit Lions ended up with five total picks in the 2011 NFL Draft. There was some skepticism among fans that they did not have enough picks and with the picks that they had they did not address major needs. We have been over it and that’s not what this article is going to address.

Martin Mayhew has said publicly that there are more ways to add to a roster than just through the draft. Most people upon hearing this would think he is talking about free agency but if we look at how the Lions used every pick we will see that there is much more to what Mayhew is talking about.

The 2011 NFL Draft is right around the corner and there are conversations happening everywhere relating to one big question. That question would be the following: Who should the Lions select in the first round of the draft?

Most make the case that a cornerback is the biggest need and therefore a cornerback is who they should select. Some talk about the Lions need to protect their franchise quarterback and address that by selecting an offensive tackle. Both lines of thought make sense. It all depends on who is on (or off) the draft board when they pick. (more…)

Gone are the days of drafting a player by throwing darts at the “Big Board” while blindfolded. This could have been done in the not so distant past because of the lack of talent on the Lions roster and the amount of holes they needed to fill. Think about it, Matt Millen might have done better employing this strategy. Maybe he did, it all makes sense now. I can see Millen playing darts in his basement.

Honestly, the Lions were so devoid of NFL talent that they could have drafted from almost any position and addressed a need with the exception of wide receiver of course. Can you tell I am still bitter at how the Lions were handled between 2000 and 2008?

Enough of the past, let’s come to today. The Lions have a much more talented roster than they did three years ago and it shows in their level of competition and the overall on the field product. Now the pressure is on to be able to pinpoint an area of need and select the right players to fill those needs.
