We are just over a week removed from the 2013 NFL Draft but there is already some bad news regarding the health of one of the Detroit Lions’ top picks. Darius Slay reportedly had arthroscopic knee surgery on Friday to address his torn meniscus.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter broke the news on twitter:

Lions’ 2nd-rd pick Darius Slay underwent arthroscopic knee surgery Friday, but is expected to be ready well before training camp.

— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) May 7, 2013

Martin Mayhew acknowledge that Slay suffered a knee injury during his pro day workout and that the team was well aware of that when they made the pick. There wasn’t any initial indication that surgery would be required but either the extent of the injury is more severe or the decision was made to have it repaired now rather than taking a chance that it might linger.

Surgery means Slay won’t be able to participate in this week’s rookie minicamp with recovery expected to take about two weeks. In short, Slay and the Lions are sacrificing some early practice time for assurance the knee won’t be an issue later. Slay should be at 100% to compete for a starting cornerback role in training camp.

The Detroit Lions enter another draft season with a need at wide receiver. Titus Young’s attitude bought him a ticket out of town while Nate Burleson and Ryan Broyles suffered season ending injuries.

Fortunately, those following the offseasons of Broyles and Burleson via social media have been given plenty of reason to be optimistic about the prospects of both returning to contribute to the 2013 Lions sooner rather than later.

Broyles’ wife sent out the following tweet and photo of Ryan getting in a little rehab work while waiting for a ride at the airport:

While waiting for our ride at the airport @ryanbroyles is doing high knees..no big deal lol instagr.am/p/W4sILWHSbB/

— Mary Beth Broyles (@1Mary_Beth) March 15, 2013

Nate Burleson has obviously been putting in work as he works back from a broken leg. He’s already doing some pretty impressive things. For instance, this video:

I’ve never broken my leg and I certainly can’t do that. Then again, I’m not a professional athlete. Or in shape.

There are still four and a half months until training camp starts. Here’s to hoping what looks like good progress continues.

A healthy Ryan Broyles would go a long way towards the Detroit Lions’ offense having a bounce-back year in 2013. The example of Adrian Peterson’s recovery and return isn’t realistic for everyone but early indications seem that Broyles is doing well in his recovery.

Broyles sent the following tweet with picture late this morning:

First day running! I’m on my way! twitter.com/RyanBroyles/st…

[RELATED: Detroit Lions Review and Offseason Plan: Wide Receivers]

Even if the running is confined to the low-resistance setting of the pool, it is still a good sign that the recovery and rehab are progressing nicely.

One thing that has been apparent in Broyles’ time with the Lions is that he always brings a positive attitude and that hasn’t changed in the midst of a second ACL rehabilitation process.
