Detroit Lions Training Camp continued on Sunday. Preparation  for the Jacksonville Jaguars is also officially underway following a workout in helmets and shorts at the Allen Park Training Facility.

The following dialogue is via Lions head coach, Jim Caldwell following practice on Sunday.

Opening statement: One of those practices where we come out and just try to keep things moving, cover a bunch of different situations and I think the guys responded well. So I’ll open it up for any questions.”

On DE Jason Jones and T LaAdrian Waddle returning to practice: “Well, it’s good to have them back in action. They went through individual periods and got a little work done, so it’s great to see them back out there.”

On how he will determine if Waddle and Jones will play Friday: “You know, we’ll see. We really just confer with the doctors and see where they are. Obviously, coming back out and getting right into the thick of things, individual periods are a little bit different than pads on going to work, so we’ll have to see where they are. This is part of the progression.”

On how long it typically takes to return to team drills: “Everybody’s different.”

On what he needs to see from CB Alex Carter before Carter is thrown into a game: “Well, you know, you can’t do that. Obviously, you have to be able to give him a chance to at least have some success, so it’s just a progression for him as well. He’s missed so much, it’s going to take him a little bit to catch up. But he’s been in it mentally. Physically it’s a little bit different applying the different techniques he’s learned. So we’ll see how that goes,”

On the possibility of Waddle playing in the regular season opener: “It’s a possibility, but that’s not saying much. It may happen, it may not. But as you can see when he gets out here with a couple weeks to go yet, it’s promising.”

On the recent injuries to TE Eric Ebron and S Isa Abdul-Quddus: “Things that will just take a short period of time for the most part, so nothing too serious.”

On the injury to LB Kyle Van Noy: “He’s getting checked out. He’s had a bit of an injury that sort of occurred about a week ago or so, and is just increasingly getting a little bit worse. So he’s getting looked at closely. He’s got some issues.”

On if Van Noy’s injury is related to the sports hernia he suffered last season: “No. When you say related, our entire body is interconnected obviously, but it’s a different injury.”

On the excitement of getting Jones and Waddle back on the field: “I’m happy to see them back. They both add a lot to our team. Two veteran guys that do a great job of leadership, but then also they’re fine performers as well. So it’s always good to get them back on the field. It doesn’t necessarily mean that they’re going to play this weekend or next weekend, anything of that nature. But they’re making good progress.”

On the decision to use G Laken Tomlinson at left guard: “We really interchange those guys for the most part. He could be anywhere. He could be right, he could be at tackle for all we know, or center. We move those guys around quite a bit.”

On the position changes on the offensive line at practice today: “Is that supposed to be brought up? You see things out there on the field. We aren’t talking about depth chart and that kind of stuff, right? What happens out there on the field in terms of where they align, I’m not going to discuss that.”

On DE Ezekiel Ansah and if he is battling an injury:  “Yeah. Yeah, he’s got a little bit of a nagging injury, but he’s, you know, I think he’s going to be ok.”

On if there is concern that Ansah’s injury could be long-term or lingering:  “Anytime anybody has got any sort of injury, you know, you’re concerned about it, but our doctors, he’s in good hands and they’ll get him ready as quickly as he responds.”

On RB Joique Bell:  “You know, he’s getting closer. To be honest with you, he’s really getting closer and he’s been doing his field work and making really, really good progress. So, you know, we’ll see.”

On needing to see DT Haloti Ngata on the field:  “Whenever he is ready.”

On if he anticipates Ngata playing in the regular season opener:  “You know, you don’t know. I can’t predict that. You know, it’s just one of those things that we have to kind of see where they are, you know. We’re hopeful. We look at how he’s been performing and going through just in terms of his rehab, you know, we’re optimistic.”

On if Ngata needs time because of the different system:  “Not really, to be honest with you. No.”

On being comfortable with his running backs if RB Joique Bell can’t play Week 1: “Probably the same reason last year. You talk about inexperience with our coordinators and, you know, you know when guys can do the job. We’ll have guys in there that can do the job if he can’t though.”

On RB Ameer Abdullah handling a big workload:  “It just kind of depends on what you expect of him. Your expectations might be different than ours, but he will be able to do what we ask him to do.”

On his expectations for Abdullah:  “That remains to be seen, so we will see where he is. Couple more games yet.”
