Kris Durham and Shamari Benton are the latest cuts by the Detroit Lions as reported by Dave Birkett. This leaves them with 13 more roster cuts to be made.
It’s quite shocking to see Durham let go although he hasn’t been performing well during training camp and throughout the preseason. This is great news for receivers like Ryan Broyles, Corey Fuller and Kevin Ogletree who were fighting for roster spots.
Durham had just four catches for 17 yards this preseason, but was consistently playing with the first-team offense. At this point, I would guess that both Broyles and Fuller may be safe by the deadline.
Kris Durham is not practice squad eligible, so this will be it for him as a Lion.
Shamari Benton was acquired after the release of Justin Jackson earlier this month. It’s not much of a surprise to see him cut as it’s hard to pick up a new defense just a couple weeks before final rosters are set.
The Lions now have seven linebackers remaining on the roster with at least one more likely to be released.
