As reported by Dave Birkett, the Detroit Lions have released offensive guard Rodney Austin.
For now, this means that the Lions will likely keep only eight offensive linemen. Austin had outplayed backup center/guard Travis Swanson throughout the preseason, but Swanson was considered a lock due to being drafted in the third-round of this year’s NFL Draft.
This doesn’t exactly guarantee the end of Austin’s tenure as a Detroit Lion, because they still have to designate Kyle Van Noy on the injured reserve/designated to return list on Tuesday and can add an extra player at that point.
With under two hours left before the deadline, the Lions now have eight more cuts to be made.
