Peter King and the MMQB tour stopped in Detroit to check out the 2014 Lions earlier this month for their Detroit Lions season preview. Overall it seems like King views the Lions, like many in the national media, as a team that is too reliant on their offense. He predicts the Lions will spend a majority of their games getting into shootouts with teams across the league. He notes that Joique Bell should play a key role, along with newly acquired wide receiver Golden Tate in helping to ease the burden on Calvin Johnson.
On the defensive side, King is far less kind. He doesn’t believe the Lions’ defense will be able to help the team much this season, even though they finished in the middle of the pack last year. The Lions were the only team in the NFC North to finish above the league average in total defense according to Football Outsiders. We’ll see if the Lions new additions, as well as second year players like Darius Slay and Ziggy Ansah can help change King’s opinion.
