The Detroit Lions drafted Nate Freese to be their starting placekicker, but it’s the guy on the futures deal who seems to be winning this battle.

Giorgio Tavecchio banged in a 25-yard field goal during Friday night’s 27-26 loss against the Oakland Raiders, plus converted his only extra-point try. It was another good day in a training camp full of them for the Italian placekicker.

But this one meant a little something extra.

It was just the second preseason game.

It was against arguably the least-descript team currently in the National Football League, the once-proud Oakland Raiders.

So, granted, there is only so much that can be determined under the circumstances.

However, it was nonetheless impressive what the Lions presented offensively Friday night.

After sitting out the first two games of the preseason for precautionary reasons, Detroit Lions receiver Calvin Johnson said he expects to play this week against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

“I’ll get some burn this game,” Johnson told the Free Press as he walked off the field after practice today. “I’ll get some plays in this game. I’ll feel good about it then.”
