Despite being awarded on a waiver claim on Monday, wide receiver Jon Baldwin will not be joining the Detroit Lions. The Lions waived Baldwin today after a failed physical.
Baldwin arrived in Detroit with a knee problem that caused him to miss practice time earlier in training camp before being waived by the San Francisco 49ers.
Injury aside, Baldwin’s NFL career has been a thorough disappointment so far after being the 26th overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft. He was acquired by the 49ers in a swap of disappointing wide receivers, with A.J. Jenkins going to the Chiefs.
The “bust” label is more and more fitting with the passing days. Baldwin has totaled just 44 catches for 607 yards and two touchdowns through his first three years in the league. Now he’ll have to find a team willing to give him another chance. Injured and thus far unproductive when healthy, that may not be an easy task despite his 6’4″, 230 pound frame.
