Cleveland Browns Won't Start Johnny Manziel Against Detroit Lions

Cleveland Browns rookie Johnny Manziel will make his NFL debut in Detroit, but it won’t be as the starting quarterback.

Browns beat writer Mary Kay Cabot reports that former Michigan State quarterback Brian Hoyer will be the first to take a snap against the Lions defense on Saturday night.

Manziel has taken some reps with the starting offense but he hasn’t earned the title of starting quarterback. He may at some point, but Brown coach Mike Pettine doesn’t think Hoyer has done anything to lose the starting job.

That being said, Manziel may not be relegated to only working with the second-team on Saturday.

Lions defensive coordinator Teryl Austin was asked about preparing to face Manziel after yesterday’s practice. Austin stated that they aren’t putting any focus on preparing for the unconventional rookie.

We’re not. We’re preparing for ourselves right now. We’re getting ourselves ready and are focusing in on us. It’s our offense against our defense at this point.

Whether or not they specifically gameplan to face Manziel, facing him does give some additional intrigue to a preseason game.
