Jim Caldwell Explains Detroit Lions' Varied Practice Times

Take a look at the Detroit Lions’ training camp schedule and it might look like practice times were picked out of a hat at random. The schedule of open practices lists five different start times ranging from 8:30 AM to 7:30 PM.

There is a method to the madness and in fact, it isn’t even madness after hearing Jim Caldwell’s explanation.

We like to kind of change things up because, obviously it gives them a little bit (of a) different time of operation in terms of when they’re going to practice. We think we can keep things fresh that way and we also have some things we do at night. We do play some night games. Our opener is at night, preseason games are played in the evening as well. But it gives them the opportunity to practice at night as well, so their body can get adjusted to it.

Caldwell could have also referenced their week eight trip to London to play the Atlanta Falcons in a game that will kick off at 9:30 AM in Detroit.

The Detroit Lions hit the practice field as a full squad for the first time in training camp today at 3:30 PM. The session is open to season ticket holders who pre-registered. The first practice open to general public will be Wednesday evening at Wayne State. For times and details, go to DetroitLions.com.
