Not only did the Detroit Lions have a successful 2013 draft, they also did quite well with undrafted free agents. LaAdrian Waddle and Joseph Fauria not only made the final 53-man roster, but contributed to the team on the field as rookies.
The official list of undrafted free agents was announced on DetroitLions.com:
James Franklin, QB, 6-2, 230, Missouri
Cornelius Lucas, T, 6-9, 328, Kansas State
Andrew Peacock, WR, 5-10, 190, Appalachian State
Mohammed Seisay, CB, 6-2, 200, Nebraska
Gabe Lynn, S, 6-0, 204, Oklahoma
Chad Abram, FB, 6-0, 229, Florida State
Alex Bullard, G, 6-2, 302, Tennessee
D.J Morrell, G, 6-6, 325, Old Dominion
Justin Jackson, LB, 6-1, 230, Wake Forest
Jacob Maxwell, TE, 6-4, 240, Louisiana Lafayette
Jerome Couplin, S, 6-2, 215, William and Mary
Franklin and Lucas are the headliners of the group. Franklin will have the opportunity to unseat Kellen Moore as the team’s third quarterback and gives them the added dimension of a dual-threat quarterback – a valuable trait to give the Lions defense something different to play against in practice.
Lucas received a $20,000 bonus to sign with the Lions, one of the largest bonuses handed out by any team to any undrafted player. He will have the opportunity to win a spot at the Lions fourth tackle.
To make room on the roster, the Lions released cornerback Nate Ness, safety Akwasi Owusu-Ansah, tight end Matt Veldman, kicker John Potter, wide receiver Carlin Isles, linebacker Jon Morgan, center Sherman Carter and wide receiver Cody Wilson.
Additional undrafted players will take part in the Lions rookie minicamp this weekend on a tryout basis.
