2014 NFL Draft: Detroit Lions Select Nate Freese

The pick is in, the Detroit Lions have made their eighth selection of the 2014 NFL Draft.

Who: Nate Freese
What: Kicker
Where: Boston College
When: Round 7, Pick 14 (229 overall)
Why: Like they did with Sam Martin at punter a year ago, the Detroit Lions turn to the draft in hopes of solving a specialist position. Freese will have to beat out Giorgio Tavecchio and John Potter for the job but it says a lot that the Lions would use a draft pick to specifically tab Freese as the guy to get that chance as opposed to hoping to sign him, or someone else, as an undrafted free agent.

Freese hit 71 of 80 career field goal attempts and ended his Boston College career as their all-time leader in field goals made and points. Had a career-long of 52 yards, one such kick came as time expired to beat Maryland.
