2014 NFL Draft: Detroit Lions Select Eric Ebron

The pick is in, the Detroit Lions have made their first selection of the 2014 NFL Draft. In the end, they stayed put at ten and landed Eric Ebron, a tight end out of North Carolina.

Who: Eric Ebron
What: Tight End
Where: North Carolina
When: Round 1, Pick 10
Why: The phrase “best player available” always comes up with Martin Mayhew drafts but this pick is more about getting more dynamic on offense. The Lions re-signed Brandon Pettigrew but Ebron gives them a bigger receiving threat. Ebron is a modern tight end in the mold of Jimmy Graham and will work the field differently than Pettigrew or even Joe Fauria.

He’s listed as a tight end but he won’t line up inline much. In that regard, he will help with the Lions’ need at wide receiver.

Today has been a special day for Ebron. In addition to being drafted in the top ten, he proposed to his girlfriend on the top of the Empire State Building. Like the Lions, she said yes to Eric.
