The Detroit Lions apparent interest in Sammy Watkins as a top 2014 NFL Draft target has been well known for some time. If you put stock in how much a team interacts with a prospect, no one showed more interest in Watkins than the Lions.
The Lions are the only team Sammy Watkins met with more than once. Watkins: "That sounds like they really want me, but you never know."

What does it really mean? Probably not much. Yes, the Lions probably do really like Watkins but they’ve also shown in the past that there doesn’t have to be a link between contact and interest. It is quite possible other teams are just as interested, or more interested, yet have been more reserved in showing it.
Leading up to the 2010 draft, the kept their interest in Jahvid Best so to themselves that Best was surprised they traded back into the first round to select him because they hadn’t been in contact with him. That’s not to say that things are always the opposite of what they may seem, only that the amount of interest shown isn’t a great indicator that a player will or will not end up with a particular team.
It seems the Lions-Watkins speculation has gone on for ever but we’re just a day away from seeing Watkins put on a team cap and hold up a jersey. Maybe they’ll be Honolulu blue and silver and maybe they’ll be something else.
