Calvin Johnson Only Detroit Lions Player to Rank in Top 50 for Merchandise Sales

One way to gauge NFL player popularity is in the demand of products bearing their name or likeness. Using that as the barometer, Detroit Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson was the 20th-most popular player for the one-year period stretching from March 1, 2013 through February 28, 2014.

The NFL Players Inc. released the top 50 list and Megatron at 20 is the only Detroit Lions player to be named.

It doesn’t take much scanning to see that all it takes to make a big jump into or up the rankings is a winning season and deep playoff run. The Super Bowl Champion Seattle Seahawks place three in the top 12 with Richard Sherman checking in at number 12 after not making the top 50 in previous releases.

It also doesn’t hurt to be a quarterback as nine of the top ten play the position.
