The Detroit Lions have reportedly retained veteran cornerback Rashean Mathis per a report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Veteran CB Rashean Mathis, entering his 12th season, is signing a one-year deal with the Detroit Lions, where he started 13 games last year.

Mathis proved he had something left in the tank last season as he become the Lions’ most dependable cover corner. His +5.8 overall rating from Pro Football Focus was easily the team’s best and was good enough for 27th-highest among all corners who played at least 25% of team snaps.
The Lions would surely love to see one of their young corners step up to pass Rashean Mathis and/or Chris Houston on the depth chart but retaining Mathis gives the Lions the same fall-back plan they had to rely on a season ago. Doing so again would signal trouble, a big reason a cornerback routinely appears as the Lions’ pick in many mock drafts.
Chris Houston needs to bounce back and Darius Slay needs to seize control of a starting spot, but Mathis will be ready just in case.
