Any thought that the Detroit Lions signing James Ihedigbo was a formality might need to change. Ihedigbo has other options, including staying with the Ravens, and the Lions aren’t just waiting without investigating other options. Ihedigbo is likely still “Plan A” due to his familiarity with Lions’ new defensive coordinator Teryl Austin but the team is hosting former Atlanta Falcons safety Thomas DeCoud on a free agent visit.

The Falcons released DeCoud to clear $3 million in salary cap space earlier this month. DeCoud, who turned 29-years old just a couple days ago, is coming off a brutal season in which he graded out as the 83rd of 86 safeties according to Pro Football Focus. He was a Pro Bowler in 2012 but still received an overall negative rating from PFF for the season. Even at his best, DeCoud has never received more than a modest positive overall season rating from PFF.
Is DeCoud a backup plan? Very likely, and hopefully more of backup plan to the backup plan.
