It was reported earlier today that the Detroit Lions had reached an agreement with tight end Brandon Pettigrew. Thanks to USA Today’s Tom Pelissero, we now have more details regarding the structure of the four-year, $16 million deal.
Brandon Pettigrew deal: four years, $16 million, $8 million guaranteed, $4 million bonus; salaries $1.25 million, $2.8M, $3.65M, $4.35M
— Aaron Wilson (@RavensInsider) March 14, 2014
Signing bonuses are received up front so Pettigrew will bring in $5.25 million in cash for 2014. For salary cap purposes, that money gets spread over the life of the contract, making Pettigrew’s 2014 salary cap number $2.25 million. Add $1 million to each of the annual salaries above to determine the cap hit for that year.
The $8 million in guaranteed money is made up of the $4 million signing bonus, $1.2 million base salary for 2014 and $2.8 million base salary for 2015. In that regard, the contract can be viewed as a two-year, $8 million deal with the Lions able to move on and gain some cap space if they need to.
