Detroit Lions Free Agency: Donte Whitner and Ed Dickson as Possibilities?

Jason La Canfora has a new NFL free agency primer on today and he includes a couple interesting items as far as the Detroit Lions are concerned.

The Lions have already been linked to safety T.J. Ward but La Canfora mentions another option in free agency depending on how the market plays out:

Should the market get a little soft for 49ers safety Donte Whitner, I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Lions exploring him as an option, while the Eagles are also looking to upgrade at safety and Malcolm Jenkins would be a fit there.

If Willie Young is to return to the Lions, it may require a deal that causes some raised eyebrows.

Given the dearth of options, and his emerging talent, Detroit end Willie Young will do better than some expect on the open market.

At tight end, La Canfora skips any discussion about Brandon Pettigrew returning in favor of talking about a possible replacement.

The tight end group is simply short on difference-makers. Ed Dickson‘s blocking ability would make him a fit to replace Brandon Pettigrew in Detroit.

None of it means a whole lot now but it does give us a couple more names to watch and some tidbits to consider as the official free agency period begins.
