Sammy Watkins' Pro Day Sends the Superlatives Flying

In what is considered a deep class of wide receivers, Sammy Watkins has had no trouble separating himself as the consensus number one prospect at the position. According to what is being said following his pro day workout at Clemson today, the gap between Watkins and his peers has grown.

Pro day workouts are designed to make prospects look as good as possible but the praise for Watkins is at another level. Some are going all-in calling Watkins’ workout the best-ever for a wide receiver:

Before you write that off as just the opinion of one scout, many who were present are putting what they saw squarely in the “special” category.

It wouldn’t mean as much if the workout doesn’t line up with the game tap. But it does.

Watkins was already expected to be off the board by the time the Lions are on the clock with the tenth overall pick. That didn’t stop Martin Mayhew and Jim Caldwell from traveling to Clemson to check out Watkins in-person. They too apparently liked what they saw.

Could a move up the board be in order for the Lions? Watkins would take care of a huge need and provide Matthew Stafford with another weapon – something Mayhew has tried to do in just about every draft.
