Like any NFL team, the Detroit Lions have a number of players set to become free agents – some of whom will return to the team, while others will not.
We’ll have to wait to see which players end up on the “will return” list because there may be other teams in play for their services, but Martin Mayhew gave some clarity this morning in regards to who won’t return.
Try this again: Martin Mayhew said pending FAs Rocky McIntosh, Dylan Gandy, Israel Idonije, David Akers and John Wendling won't return

That list of names isn’t particularly surprising, aside from perhaps John Wendling.
Wendling has played well on special teams for the Lions for a number of years and was one of the team’s captains for the 2013 season. The sight of Wendling on the field in his listed position of safety was a terrifying thought but he was a valuable member of the special teams units. Carrying a cap hit in the final year of his deal at over $900,000, Wendling’s role can be filled by a younger, cheaper option.
