Detroit Lions Face Uncertain Quarterback Depth Chart

The Detroit Lions have an unquestioned starting quarterback but what the week one roster behind Matthew Stafford looks like is very much a question mark.

Shaun Hill is regarded as one of the league’s best backup quarterbacks but he is set to become a free agent. The opportunity for more playing time, as well as the Lions’ tight salary cap situation, could mean his days in Detroit are over. However, Martin Mayhew didn’t rule out the possibility of Hill returning when speaking with local reporters this morning.

How diligently the Lions push to keep Hill could depend on how they feel about Kellen Moore. Mayhew’s comments this morning sure didn’t make it sound like he would be comfortable with Moore as the Lions’ number two quarterback.

It seems everything from the status quo with Hill returning as number two and Moore remainign the number three to a complete backup quarterback overhaul are possibilities at this point. That leaves open the possibility that the Lions could draft a quarterback – not early, but someone with enough upside to project as a better backup option than Kellen Moore.
