This afternoon the Detroit Lions officially ended their coaching search naming Jim Caldwell their head coach.
The dominoes are now starting to fall as ESPN’s Ed Werder reported earlier that Eagles quarterback Coach Bill Lazor will be a strong candidate for the Detroit Lions new offensive coordinator.

The move is a bit surprising as the Lions were thought to be looking for more experienced coaches, but ultimately it’s Caldwell’s decision and Lazor did do a fantastic job with Nick Foles in his first season as a starter.
It’s obvious that the first two hires have filled immediate needs for the Lions, at least on paper. Caldwell is regarded as a detail oriented coach who has head coaching experience and is thought to demand discipline. He is also credited by Peyton Manning as the guy who took him to “the next level.”
A coaching tandem of Caldwell and Lazor, who turned a backup quarterback in Nick Foles into an extremely efficient passer with little NFL experience, should be the right step towards helping Matthew Stafford reach his potential.
