Detroit Lions to Hire Jim Caldwell as Head Coach, According to Report

The Detroit Lions will reportedly hire Jim Caldwell as their head coach. The news broke early this afternoon from ESPN’s Adam Schefter:

The report was quickly confirmed by Tim Twentyman of the team’s official website:

The Lions have been tight-lipped about their search process but it was widely believed they were high on San Diego Chargers offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt. After interviewing Caldwell, Gary Kubiak and Mike Munchak, the Lions interviwed Whisenhunt last Thursday but no one after him.

It looked like a deal with Whisenhunt might be done as a private jet registered to WCF Aircraft Corp sat at Detroit Metro Airport with a flight plan filed for San Diego. That plane never took off and news broke that Whisenhunt had accepted the Tennessee Titans head coaching job.

Whatever the truth is regarding how the process played out, Caldwell is sure to be seen as a consolation prize in the eyes of the public. However, Caldwell does come with an impressive set of credentials as both a head coach and assistant, including spending many years coaching Peyton Manning.’s Ian Rapoport reported on just how detailed Caldwell was during his first interview withe Lions earlier in the month:

Prior to his interview with Lions brass, Caldwell charted every one of Stafford’s 2013 passes. He then diagnosed what went wrong and told the staff where he could help the quarterback improve, NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport said Saturday on NFL Network’s “NFL GameDay Morning.”

Caldwell also watched film with Stafford and offered corrections on throws, Rapoport said.
