For the better part of two weeks the Detroit Lions have been thought to be very interested in Ken Whisenhunt to become their next head coach. Over that time, that notion has only grown in strength.

Yesterday came reports that called Whisenhunt a “clear favorite” and suggestions that negotiations between the two parties were expected to begin as soon as the Chargers had been eliminated.

The Chargers elimination from the playoffs was a crucial step as NFL rules prohibit teams from hiring assistants who are under contract with teams still alive in the playoffs. With the Chargers losing to the Broncos this evening, Ken Whisenhunt is officially available for hire.

In addition to the Lions, Whisenhunt also interviewed with the Titans and Browns this week. The Vikings reportedly also sought permission from the Chargers but didn’t get an interview and now reports say Mike Zimmer has emerged as the favorite to land that job.

So, how long will it take?
