Ken Whisenhunt Upgraded from Favorite to 'Clear Favorite' to Become Detroit Lions Head Coach

Ken Whisenhunt has been thought to be the favorite to become the Detroit Lions next head coach for more than a week but it might be time to upgrade that designation even more.

Whisenhunt formally interviewed with the Lions in San Diego on Thursday but details of how it went have been hard to come by. Perhaps that is to be expected considering he has a playoff game to prepare for while also interviewing with the Titans and Browns this week.

NFL.com helps fill in the picture in an article posted to the site today:

Whisenhunt interviewed with the Detroit Lions on Thursday and remains the clear front-runner to become their next head coach. A source close to the search told NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport, “It is all Whiz.”

Rapoport said Saturday on NFL Network’s “NFL GameDay” that a deal between the Lions and Whisenhunt could come together quickly if the Chargersare knocked off by the heavily favored Denver Broncosin Sunday’s divisional playoffs.

The Chargers Wild Card victory over the Bengals last week didn’t necessarily slow down the Lions process since they were still granted an interview this week. A Chargers upset over the Broncos tomorrow however, could slow the process because the Lions can’t hire Whisenhunt until the Chargers are eliminated from the playoffs. If he remains the guy, they’ll have to wait.
