Find a corner of the internet discussing possible Detroit Lions coaching candidates and you’re sure to find Ken Whisenhunt’s name. This site certainly isn’t excluded as the fit seems quite natural.
Whisenhunt is a former teammate of Martin Mayhew and has the offensive track record that should be attractive as the franchise looks for some else to lead and develop Matthew Stafford.
However, actual links between the Lions and Whisenhunt haven’t surfaced – until today.

It is important to note that “calling around” and “checking references” is a similar level of detail as the Lions did in looking in to Tom Cable. However, this time we should expect the process to continue beyond simple due diligence.
The Lions can’t interview Whisenhunt this week because he is preparing for a Wild Card game as the San Diego Chargers‘ offensive coordinator, but they may get their chance next week whether the Chargers advance or not.
