Detroit Lions fans hoping that Bill O’Brien would become the team’s next coach will have to look for a second choice. O’Brien and the Houston Texans were reportedly on the verge of a deal as early as Monday and while it may have taken a little longer than first though, the deal is done.
Penn State’s Bill O’Brien has reached an agreement to become the new coach of the Houston Texans, according to league sources.
The deal is expected to be announced no later than Saturday.
The Texans had a jump on the coaching market after firing Gary Kubiak during the season. According to ESPN, the team met with O’Brien the week after Christmas.
How much of a player for O’Brien the Lions actually were isn’t clear. Although they were thought to have interest, the Lions never looked more than a fallback option if discussions with the Texans broke down.
