The Detroit Lions were expected to interview former Bears coach Lovie Smith for their head coaching vacancy but that is officially off with news breaking that Smith has agreed to a deal with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Smith likely wouldn’t have been the most popular hire with Lions fans but he appeared poised to become a serious candidate nonetheless.

Of the likely candidates remaining, Ken Whisenhunt seems to be the current favorite with Lions fans. The Lions have been linked to some names so far but reports of actual interviews, perhaps a sign that Whisenhunt, who can’t interview this week with the Chargers preparing for a playoff game, is higher on their list.
