2014 NFL Mock Draft: The Detroit Lions Select…

With the Detroit Lions officially eliminated from playoff contention, our attention turns more fully to the draft. Our weekly look at a mock draft was a lot more fun when it was just turning a brief eye towards the draft with most of our attention focused on chasing down a playoff spot. Alas, we can’t have nice things.

As the Lions have dropped in the standings they’ve been climbing the draft board. At one point it looked like they would pick somewhere in the early 20s, now we take a look at Erik Lambert’s new mock draft on NFL Mocks and find the Lions sitting with the 12th pick in the first round.

His pick…Sammy Watkins, wide receiver from Clemson. Lambert comments:

Megatron has largely been a one-man show for the Detroit Lions since he was drafted. The team has to get a consistent second option to take the heat off. Fans and coaches count their lucky stars that the explosive Sammy Watkins ends up in town.

The picks makes a lot of sense not only because the Lions really do need a receiver to play opposite Calvin Johnson, but because we’re likely facing an offseason where the theme will be all about helping Matthew Stafford. There is already a lot of talk in fan circles and sports talk radio about the Lions needing to get a offensive/quarterback-minded coach to get the most of the team’s investment in Matthew Stafford and you can bet that sentiment will be evident in personnel decisions.
