Detroit Lions vs. Pittsburgh Steelers: Weather Could Be a Factor

The Detroit Lions and Pittsburgh Steelers spent the week preparing for each other but the game is likely to be impacted by another external factor: the weather.

Eastern Pennsylvania is getting hit with rain this morning and the way the line of showers is moving on radar, that is expected to continue throughout the day. Take a look at the hourly forecast for Pittsburgh during today’s game:

With a game time temperature around 60 degrees, this shouldn’t be too miserably of a day for the players or fan in the stadium, however it could have an impact on field conditions. Heinz Field is routinely used for football other than Steelers games so the condition of the grass might already have been suspect. Add in rain today and we’re likely to see some slipping and a lot of muddy jerseys.

Another thing to keep an eye on is what the wind is doing. Speeds of 12-13 miles per hour aren’t bad, but they aren’t much more than what David Akers dealt with when he missed a field goal attempt in Chicago last week. Schwartz explained the big issue with the wind last week in that miss was the swirling conditions. Hopefully Heinz Field’s more open design keeps the winds more predictable.
