Detroit Lions Officially Release Tony Scheffler

The Detroit Lions have made it official: Tony Scheffler is a former-Lion.

Dave Birkett reported earlier in the day that the team would be making a roster move with Scheffler – either an outright release or placing him on injured reserve. Scheffler has been cleared from his concussion so releasing him gives him an opportunity to try to find somewhere else to play this season. As a veteran, Scheffler is not subject to waivers so he is a free agent immediately.

There was a time when Scheffler was the team’s touchdown pass catching dance machine but he has even been replaced in that role by undrafted free agent Joseph Fauria. The writing was on the wall that this would be Scheffler’s last season with the team and he won’t even make it to the end.

The move makes room for free agent OT Barry Richardson.
