For the second week in a row, I’m diving up the Detroit Lions game ball. This weekly post usually goes up earlier in the week but it is a topic I’ve been thinking about a lot. Truth be told, I’ve had a hard time coming up with a decision on who should receive the SideLion Report game ball for week four.
Unlike in week two when I decided on punter Sam Martin, this is a good problem to have. The beat down of the Bears was such a complete effort that there are many candidates. In the end, I couldn’t pick just one and getting down to a final two wasn’t an easy decision. However, the decision has been made.
Louis Delmas – The Lions have been very intentional in their handling of Louis Delmas to maximize his playing time after a couple injury plagued season. So far, so good but the real impact isn’t just having the “heart and soul” of the defense on the field, it is the fact that Louis Delmas is making plays again. Delmas was a playmaker as a rookie but that went away as the injuries set in. The playmaker returned in a big way against the Bears with two interceptions and some solid tackles.
Ndamukong Suh – Part of the reason Delmas was able to make plays was because of the Lions’ play up front, led by Ndamukong Suh. He was already the highest-rated defensive tackle according to Pro Football Focus through three weeks and his play in week four solidified his standing as one of the NFL’s best defensive players. Suh was solid against the run and pressuring Jay Cutler, finishing with two sacks and three quarterback hurries.
