The Detroit Lions were happy to sign Chris Greenwood to their practice squad after he was unable to make the final 53-man roster. After all, they invested a 2012 fifth-round pick in Greenwood and he still posses the potential they saw two Aprils ago. But injuries stunted Greenwood’s development and it was clear they couldn’t carry him on their active roster.
Retaining Greenwood on the practice squad allowed for the team to continue developing him, but there was never a guarantee that effort would pay off for the Lions – in part because practice squad players are free to sign on with any team’s active roster.
According to reports, that is just what has happened.

The Lions receive no compensation in return while the Cowboys have to pay Greenwood and count him against their 53-man roster limit for a minimum of three weeks.
