When the Lions claimed safety DeJon Gomes off waivers on Sunday, there was a bit of confusion among Lions fans.
That confusion came from the idea of adding another safety when the Lions already had five of them. Also, what made Gomes special enough to make the Lions hold onto six safeties on the roster?
Another one that really caused some confusion was why DeJon Gomes over Tyrell Johnson, who had an impressive preseason on special teams for the Lions.
As a matter of fact, Johnson earned high praise from Jim Schwartz for the contributions he made in the preseason. Schwartz really did make it sound like Johnson was destined to make the 53-man roster.
Obviously, that didn’t happen since he was released by the team on Saturday.
It might be because Gomes is only 23 years old and has room to improve. It could also be because he has played on special teams more consistently than Johnson has ever had.
Whatever it is, the Lions have their reasoning for this move and it will show starting this Sunday against the Minnesota Vikings.
