The Detroit Lions have released Ron Bartell as they continue to work their way down to a roster of 53 players by today’s 6 p.m. ET deadline.
Bartell wasn’t considered a lock to win a roster spot but his release is easily the biggest surprise of the cut so far. He was working with the first team defense at various times during training camp and brought a veteran presence to a youthful group of cornerbacks.
This is likely good news for Rashean Mathis who joined the Lions late in camp. Mathis played well in limited action for the Lions and has the versatility to play a reserve role at corner or safety. We’ll have to wait to know for sure but the Lions may now be set at corner with Chris Houston, Darius Slay, Bill Bentley, Rashean Mathis and Jonte Green.
Here is where the roster stands following Barell’s release:
Running Back (6)
Wide Receiver (7)
Tight End (4)
Offensive Tackle (4)
Offensive Guard (4)
Long Snapper (1)
Defensive End (5)
Defensive Tackle (7)
