Moments after finding out the Detroit Lions had cut cornerback Ron Bartell, we now learn safety Amari Speivey has joined him as a former member of the Lions secondary.
Originally drafted as a cornerback in 2010, Speivey was quickly converted to safety. His play was characterized by inconsistency and battled injuries during his time with the Lions.
Spievey’s release could be seen as good news for Tyrell Johnson’s chances of making the roster. There are more cuts to go but Johnson can provide good special teams play and safety depth.
Punter Blake Clingan has also been released according to his twitter account. The move comes as no surprise as 2013 fifth-round pick had clearly outperformed him in camp and preseason games.
The updated roster with more cuts to go:
Running Back (6)
Wide Receiver (7)
Tight End (4)
Offensive Tackle (4)
Offensive Guard (4)
Long Snapper (1)
Defensive End (5)
Defensive Tackle (7)
