There are a lot of youtube videos out there the stars of which have no hope of performing their respective talents at a professional level. Not so with Havard Rugland who parlayed his trick kick magic into a training camp experience with the Detroit Lions.
Things didn’t work out in terms of earning a spot on the final roster, but that doesn’t mean “Kickalicious” is a failure or that he wasted a couple months of his life. On the contrary. Who knows how much of a shot he really ever had at beating out David Akers for the Lions kicking job but in the end, it doesn’t matter. Rugland exceeded expectations every step of the way and earned the respect of his coaches and teammates.
He worked hard while he was here and he exits with grace and thankfulness, evident in his tweet this evening.
Want to thank the Lions Org. for the opportunity. Also wanted to thank my fans & teammates, you guys are awesome. It was a great experience

Perhaps Rugland gets another shot down the line. It may not come until next training camp and it may not be with the Lions but I think I speak for all (or at least most) Lions fans when I say I hope this isn’t the last we see of Kickalicious in the NFL. I have a feeling it is not.
