The Detroit Lions cut two more players today, leaving them with just three cuts to go before today’s 4 p.m. deadline to trim the roster to 75 players.
The most notable of the most recent duo is youtube star turned kicker Havard Rugland. “Kickalicious” turned in a fine camp for a player that had to be shown how to put on an NFL uniform for the first time just a few months ago. But what the Lions were giving him was more of an opportunity to show that he might one day be able to serve as a team’s kicker, not a chance to be their kicker in 2013.
The job was always David Akers’ to lose, and despite a horrendous miss on a 31-yard chip shot last Thursday, Akers turned in a solid camp and preseason. Yes, Akers is coming off his worst season as a professional, but how he has performed with the Lions shows that last year’s problems were due to injury rather than fading talent.
Besides that fact, there is no guarantee the Lions would have immediately turned to Rugland had Akers bombed in camp. It is far more likely they would have taken a look around at other veteran kickers.
The Lions also cut cornerback DeQuan Menzie to get the roster down to 78 players.
