The Detroit Lions have until Tuesday afternoon to trim their roster down to 75 players but they are wasting no time in inching towards that mark.
One day after cutting wide receiver Chaz Schilens, cornerback Domonique Johnson and guard Derek Hardman and designating cornerback Ross Weaver and defensive tackle John Drew waived/injured, the Lions have released five more.
The biggest name is Ronnell Lewis, the team’s 2012 fourth round pick. Lewis wasn’t even able to get on the field as a special teamer as the team expected and no longer fits the physical profile the team is looking for in their defensive ends. Despite massive turnover at the position from a year ago, Lewis has been buried on the depth chart behind new addition veterans like Jason Jones and Israel Idonije and rookies Ziggy Ansah and Devin Taylor.
Safety Chris Hope, cornerback Myron Lewis, and wide receiver Cody Wilson were also let go today. The Lions have five more decisions to make before Tuesday’s 4 p.m. deadline.
