The Detroit Lions face an important test tomorrow when they take on the New England Patriots. It isn’t just that the third preseason game is as close to a regular season game as any of the four get, it is that the team still has some important questions to answer at key positions.

Some Lions fans may have wanted Jeff Backus replaced long ago but while he wasn’t ever considered one of the NFL’s elite left tackles, he was consistent, dependable and hardly to blame for the team’s failures over the past decade.

The Riley Reiff era has officially begun although it got off to a rocky start in the first preseason game. He was better last week against the Browns but still hasn’t shown much in the way of run blocking.

There isn’t any reason for fans to bail on Reiff now, but it will take a good performance against the Patriots for many to trust him entering regular season play.
