Detroit Lions Battle for Second Starting OLB Spot Nearing an End

The Detroit Lions have taken a long look at Ashlee Palmer, Tahir Whitehead and Travis Lewis as they look for a third starter alongside DeAndre Levy and Stephen Tulloch.

With Travis Lewis getting more reps at middle linebacker, the battle seems to be down to Palmer and Whitehead. Kyle Meinke’s latest for MLive.com puts out a timetable for a final decision per linebackers coach Matt Burke:

Burke said he hopes to tab a starter in about a week, either before the third preseason game Aug. 22 or immediately after it.

With a decision potentially coming before the third preseason game, tomorrow’s game against the Cleveland Browns may be the last in-game opportunity for each candidate to make an impression.

Thanks to Burke we can watch and look for the same things he will be looking for as the team moves towards making a decision on who will be the starter:

“First, I want to see consistency. I don’t want mental errors,” he said. “We talked about, ‘Hey, you got to know what you’re doing. The person we’re going to play is the person we’re going to trust. That we can trust the most out there, and that other guys are going to trust.’

“Second thing, and something we’re emphasizing this week, is physical play. I want to work a little more getting downhill and stopping that run game. We weren’t deficient last week, but I want that ramped up.

“I want those guys to show they’re willing to stick their nose up there and go hit some people. That’s what I’m looking for.”
