Detroit Lions Training Camp: Today is a Big Day for Young Defensive Ends

The Detroit Lions activated Ronnell Lewis off the Non-Football Injury List today allowing him to practice for the first time since training camp began last week.

The Lions’ defensive line depth coupled with the late start for Lewis puts him at a disadvantage in his attempt to make the final 53-man roster but he finds himself with a good opportunity to make an impression today.

Lewis returns while Israel Idonije, Willie Young and Jason Jones are all being held out of practice today. That likely means more reps for Lewis instead of being buried near the bottom of the pecking order. It also means he needs to be ready to jump right in – there just isn’t time for him to ease into camp reps.

Today is also a big opportunity for rookie defensive end Devin Taylor. His physical presence is obvious but he hasn’t necessarily been impressive in drills so far in camp. The Lions made a decent investment in him when they drafted him in the fourth round last April. He has the physical tools the team covets in their defensive ends but needs to show more. Today could be that day as he also may see increased reps with Idonije, Young and Jones on the sideline.
