Outside Linebacker
One of the most wide-open training camp battles is as outside linebacker where the Lions have put Ashlee Palmer, Tahir Whitehead and Travis Lewis on even footing throughout the offseason training program and into training camp. Palmer has the most experience and Whitehead is probably the most athletic but there isn’t any indication that Lewis has fallen off the pace just yet.

Cornerback
We know Chris Houston will open the season as one of the Lions’ starting corners but who takes the field with him is still up in the air. Ron Bartell opened camp as the starter opposite Houston with Bill Bentley manning the slot. Bartell has been sidelined with a shoulder injury, allowing rookie Darius Slay the chance to step in with the first team. That often gives Slay the opportunity to show what he can do against Calvin Johnson. So far, the coaching staff seems pleased with his performance. Don’t be surprised if Slay is in the starting lineup for week one.
