The Detroit Lions have been looking for a wide receiver to play outside opposite Calvin Johnson, whether or not they’ve found one remains to be seen but the team has signed Chaz Schilens.
The fact that Schilens was still available says a lot about the league’s collective belief in his ability to contribute but the Lions will give him a shot to see what he can do.
A former seventh-round pick, Schilens showed flashes of being a diamond in the rough early in his career but injuries kept him from having have an impact beyond those flashes.
After four seasons with the Raiders, Schilens moved on to play for the New York Jets in 2012. He played in 15 games, starting six, finishing with 28 catches for 289 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
