The Detroit Lions and Matthew Stafford have made the contract extension first reported yesterday official. The Detroit Lions twitter account tweeted out the photo of Stafford signing the deal.
A full breakdown of the deal’s structure and the impact on the salary cap is not yet known but the obvious is that it provides both the Lions and Stafford some security while providing cap relief this year and next.
Anyone thinking this deal might make Stafford complacent should probably take a good look at the photo above. Not exactly what you would expect a man to be wearing when signing a deal worth $53 million in new money. Turns out he had just finished running and was still a little sweaty. When asked what separates him from the league’s elite quarterbacks, Stafford simply responded ‘a Super Bowl ring.’
Officially signed the deal! Thank you ford family! @kellybhall & I are happy to be in Detroit for at least 5 more! Love this team and city!
