All Michael Williams really needs to do is use his blocking abilities to become successful, and have a long career in the NFL.
Williams blocking abilities are what made the Lions snatch him when he fell all the way down to the seventh round of this year’s draft. It’s surprising that he would fall down that far because he was, without a doubt, the best blocking tight end prospect in the draft.
The only legitimate reason you could make for him falling all the way down to the seventh round was because he wasn’t as polished as a receiver. A lot of teams want the best of both worlds with a tight end, the blocking and the ability to make plays down the field.
Considering the Lions already have two pretty good receiving tight ends in Brandon Pettigrew and Tony Scheffler, they really needed to balance out the depth chart by adding a blocking tight end. They also needed somebody to replace Will Heller, as the teams H-back.
The thing that already puts Williams above Heller is potential. Williams is still only 22 years, and already has excellent blocking abilities. You have to be interested in how much more he can improve as a blocker, and even as a receiver.
