Competition for NFL roster spots is fierce. But that doesn’t keep some veterans from being willing to help younger players, even those directly competing for the same job.
That is exactly what is happening with David Akers and Håvard Rugland. The Lions will carry just one kicker on the final roster but Akers isn’t going to withhold advice to gain an advantage.
“If anybody wants to come talk to me, I’m more and happy to help because I feel like those guys helped me get here, so it’s my opportunity to give back what they were able to do for me.”
Akers knows how tough it can be to break into the NFL having bounced around before latching on with the Philadelphia Eagles. That is the way it often goes even for guys with traditional paths to the league.
Rugland’s path has been anything but traditional. The former rugby player rose to fame for his youtube video of trick football kicks but had never put on American football equipment until he signed with the Detroit Lions earlier in the offseason.
Perhaps it is too much to expect Rugland to be ready to kick in the NFL in 2013 but if he ever makes it, you can bet Akers will deserve some credit for helping him make the transition.
