The Detroit Lions’ waiver claim of quarterback Thaddeus Lewis yesterday gave the Lions a total of five quarterbacks on the roster as Lewis joined Matthew Stafford, Shaun Hill, Kellen Moore and Alex Carder. It turns out adding Lewis was more about adding talent than depth as the team waived Carder today to get the quarterback depth chart back down to four.

The Lions signed Carder, who played at Western Michigan, after he went undrafted last month. It was thought he might be able to push Moore for third-string duties but now it appears Lewis will have that opportunity. In fact, it may be Moore that has to unseat Lewis rather than the other way around.

The addition of Lewis was pending a physical but he met with team doctors today and while no official word has been released, waiving Carder seems like a sure sign that all went checked out medically with Lewis.
