2013 NFL Draft: The Detroit Lions Select Sam Martin

The Detroit Lions make their fifth pick in the 2013 NFL Draft…

Who: Sam Martin
What: Punter
Where: Appalachian State
When: Round 5, Pick 32 (165 Overall, From Ravens through Seahawks)
Why: The Detroit Lions’ special teams struggled all season, and field position happened to be one of the biggest areas of concerns. To address the issue the Lions have signed “Kickalicous,” youtube sensation Harvard Rugland, and drafted Sam Martin to battle him out for the starting jump and likely only roster spot. Unlike “kickalicious”, who will likely be battling for kick off duties and field goal kicker as well, Martin is strictly a punter. He has a strong and consistent leg and possesses the ability to turn the field, exactly what the Lions are looking for.

This is a good pick up for the Lions I just wonder if they could have picked him up later in the draft, especially with receiver still an area of need.
